In short

What are the face-to-face courses?

They are four live, facilitated courses in ethics, probity, professional boundaries and reflective practice, run via video link on Zoom, with a certificate issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses on completion. Each carries 5 CPD hours and costs A$1,000, or A$850 inside the Bulk Buy bundle.

They are run virtually: face-to-face here means live and interactive with a facilitator and other participants, not a self-paced recording. Each is a live course, with breaks. Any of the four can be run one to one for A$500 more.

They are built for practitioners facing a complaint, an investigation or an Ahpra notification, and are equally used for ordinary CPD. No National Board approves courses from any provider, and no course decides a matter. What a live course gives you is a facilitator, other people in the same position, and structured work on your own case — which is the part many people find hardest to do alone.

Key terms

What Ahpra and the National Boards mean by insight, reflection and remediation

Four terms recur throughout regulatory correspondence, and the sessions are built around them. They are not interchangeable, and being clear about which one a letter is asking for makes a practical difference to how you respond.

Fitness to practise

Having the skills, knowledge, character and health to practise your profession safely and effectively. A National Board acts on a notification when a concern suggests that one of those may be in question. It is a judgement about current and future safety, not only about what happened. The National Law does not use the phrase; it names four grounds — impairment, unsatisfactory professional performance, unprofessional conduct and professional misconduct — and a Board acts under one of them.

Insight

Understanding what went wrong, why it happened, and the effect it had on patients, colleagues and public confidence in the profession. Insight is weighed at almost every stage, whatever the concern, and it is the element often described as lacking.

Reflection

Setting that understanding down honestly and in your own words, including what you would do differently and what you have already changed. Reflection is the written record of insight, which is why the two are so often confused.

Remediation

The concrete steps taken so that the same thing does not happen again — training, supervision, changes to how you work — together with evidence that they happened. Insight without remediation is an account; remediation without insight is a certificate.

The four National Law grounds

Impairment is a health matter; unsatisfactory professional performance is knowledge, skill, judgement or care below the standard of a peer; unprofessional conduct is conduct below what peers and the public reasonably expect; professional misconduct is substantially below that standard and only a tribunal can find it. Which one your letter uses tells you how the matter is being treated.

Who they are for

Every health practitioner, whatever your National Board

The courses are for practitioners facing a complaint, an investigation or an Ahpra notification, and for anyone who wants the material for CPD.

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Midwives
  • Dentists
  • Pharmacists
  • Psychologists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Osteopaths
  • Chiropractors
  • Optometrists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Podiatrists
  • Paramedics
  • Medical radiation practitioners
  • Chinese medicine practitioners
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners

Regulated by Ahpra and the 15 National Boards. In New South Wales and Queensland, where complaints are handled by the professional Councils, the HCCC and the Office of the Health Ombudsman, the courses apply in exactly the same way.

Questions practitioners ask us

Frequently asked questions

Are these courses actually face-to-face?

They are run live, via video link on Zoom. Face-to-face here means live and interactive with a facilitator and other participants, rather than a self-paced recording. You see and speak to the people in the room; the room is a video call. If you want a genuinely private session, a one-to-one version of any of the four courses is available for A$500 on top of the course price.

How long is the course, and what is the format?

A live course via Zoom, with breaks. Each course carries 5 CPD hours, and the certificate is issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses on completion. Joining details are sent when you book.

Which of the four courses should I take?

Match the course to the concern that has been raised. Probity and Ethics is for honesty and dishonesty allegations. Ethics and Professionalism is for conduct, attitude and professionalism concerns. Professional Boundaries is for boundary, consent and chaperone issues. The Reflection Workshop is for building insight and writing reflection that holds up to scrutiny. If your letter names more than one concern, or you are not sure how it has been categorised, contact us and we will help you choose.

Do I have to be facing a notification to attend?

No. The courses are built for practitioners facing a complaint, an investigation or an Ahpra notification, but they are equally used for ordinary CPD. Attending before anything has gone wrong is a perfectly ordinary reason to come.

What certificate do I get, and when?

A 5 CPD hour certificate issued by Healthcare Ethics Courses, on completion and emailed to you after the course. It records the course title, the CPD hours, your name and the date, and you can include it in a remediation plan, a written response to a National Board, or your CPD portfolio alongside your own reflection.

Does Ahpra or my National Board approve these courses?

No National Board accredits, approves or endorses courses from any provider, including us, and none keeps an approved list. What these courses give you is a certificate and a dated record that you acted, and when. The weight it carries depends on the circumstances of your matter, and no course determines an outcome.

The listed date is too late for my deadline. Can you run one sooner?

Often, yes. If you need a course urgently, contact us and we will try to arrange an earlier date. A one-to-one session can usually be arranged more quickly than a group sitting.

What is the one-to-one option?

Any of the four courses can be run as a private one-to-one session for A$500 extra, whether the course is purchased individually or as part of a Bulk Buy bundle. It covers the same material, and the date is arranged around you.

What does a course cost?

A$1,000 for a single live course. Inside the Bulk Buy bundle — one live course plus any ten online courses — it comes down to A$850: A$1,400 for the ten online courses plus A$850 for the live course, A$2,250 in total. A one-to-one session is A$500 extra either way.

Should I take a live course or the online ones?

They do different jobs. The online catalogue lets you cover several specific concerns and build a portfolio of certificates at your own pace. A live course gives you a facilitator, discussion with other practitioners in the same position, and structured exercises on your own case — which is what many people find hardest to do alone. Many people do both: the live course for insight and reflection, the online courses for breadth.

I practise in New South Wales or Queensland. Do the courses still apply?

Yes. In New South Wales conduct matters are managed by your professional Council and the Health Care Complaints Commission, and in Queensland complaints go first to the Office of the Health Ombudsman, rather than to Ahpra. The standards the courses work to — the codes of conduct, and what insight, reflection and remediation mean — are the same in every state and territory.

The other half of the catalogue

Online courses, by National Board

Forty-two self-paced CPD courses, with a page written to each Board’s code. Many people take a live course for insight and reflection, and online courses for breadth.

Any five online courses are A$850 and any ten A$1,400 — see the Bulk Buy Offer. Booking for a team rather than yourself? We run the same four courses live for healthcare organisations.
